HSR Ellen Joe Team Comp Preview|How to Build Around the Ice Destruction Main DPS? Analyzing the Dual 5-Star Crossover Chemistry with Astra Yao

Hello, Trailblazers!

Version 4.8 is less than two months away, but the moment Honkai: Star Rail revealed Ellen Joe’s splash art, I imagine many players already felt their Stellar Jade reserves start to hurt. After all, who could say no to a shark maid crossing worlds to clock in for work? The phrases written all over her artwork—“I want to go home” and “Please don’t make me cook”—hit every modern worker right in the weak spot. And with this huge in-house IP collaboration, the hype has already reached its peak.

Still, excitement aside, pulling should ultimately be a rational decision. Ellen’s Path in Star Rail has been confirmed as Ice Destruction, which means her combat logic and team-building framework will be fundamentally different from what we know in Zenless Zone Zero.

Since the official details are still being kept secret and no skill multipliers have been revealed, this article will start from the general logic of an Ice Destruction character and combine it with reliable community speculation. If Ellen is an on-field main DPS, who will be her best teammates? How should we plan our resources for this two-way Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero collaboration?

From Zenless Zone Zero to Star Rail: Predicting Ellen’s Damage Pattern

Before building a team for her, we first need to understand how she is likely to deal damage.

In Zenless Zone Zero, Ellen’s kit revolves around building up Flash Freeze Charges, consuming them to enter an enhanced state, and unleashing high-multiplier Ice slashes. She relies heavily on a specific state to enter her burst window, and her attack animations change during that state, adding multiple instances of high-frequency Ice damage. If this logic is transferred to Star Rail’s Destruction Path, she will almost certainly be a classic on-field burst main DPS.

Destruction characters usually share several traits:

They handle both single-target and multi-target damage;

They are relatively durable or have built-in survival mechanics;

They rely heavily on a specific state, dealing maximum damage during it while suffering a weaker downtime period;

The basic team structure should still be main DPS, Harmony buffer, debuffer or sub-DPS, and sustain. The biggest questions are whether Ellen needs a dedicated Ice support and whether she needs a sub-DPS to cover her downtime.

If her Traces provide a large amount of innate CRIT Rate, team building could favor a CRIT DMG Body instead of a CRIT Rate Body. That would reduce the need for CRIT buffs from Harmony characters and shift the priority toward DMG boosts, ATK, or RES PEN.

Two Limited Five-Stars: Will Ellen and Yao Guang Have Chemistry?

Ellen is not the only major character in the Version 4.8 collaboration. Yao Guang is also expected to arrive.

In Zenless Zone Zero, Yao Guang is a top-tier support. Her core mechanic is entering a special state with her Ultimate, granting the whole team a large amount of ATK and CRIT DMG while also dealing some off-field damage. If she follows the Harmony Path in Star Rail, she will likely be a dedicated buffer.

The logic behind Ellen and Yao Guang:

Mechanically, this is a classic main DPS plus dedicated support pairing. ATK and CRIT DMG are perfect for an Ice DPS with high multipliers. However, Harmony characters are already extremely competitive in Star Rail. Yao Guang will need something unique, such as copying an ally’s Ultimate or providing exceptionally strong independent multipliers.

Acquisition method determines the pull plan:

A popular community theory, based on the Fate collaboration pattern, is that the character revealed first may enter the banner while the one revealed later may be given for free.

If Ellen is limited and Yao Guang is free, this collaboration would be a huge benefit for low-spending players. If both require pulls, however, the Stellar Jade pressure will be severe.

Ellen’s Potential Teammates

Before official multipliers are released, we can review the current Star Rail roster for characters who may have the best synergy with her.

1. Damage Buffer Position — Harmony

Robin: Her Ultimate advances the entire team and grants a huge ATK boost. Her teamwide action advance could let Ellen perform several more enhanced attacks, and her energy support would help if Ellen has a demanding Ultimate rotation.

Sunday: If Ellen consumes many Skill Points or needs frequent Skill casts to build stacks, Sunday’s Skill Point economy and action advance would be extremely valuable. He can also provide CRIT DMG.

Ruan Mei: She provides teamwide DMG increase and RES PEN with excellent uptime. She is a strong option if Ellen uses a Break-oriented build or needs long-lasting buffs.

Tingyun: Energy, ATK, and DMG buffs make her an excellent budget support. If Ellen’s Ultimate multiplier is high, Tingyun can help maintain her rotation.

2. Debuffer or Sub-DPS Position

Pela and Silver Wolf: Classic partners for an Ice main DPS. Pela offers teamwide DEF reduction and generates Skill Points efficiently, while Silver Wolf can implant an Ice Weakness and reduce resistance.

Topaz, Jade, or Hunt March 7th: If Ellen has a long charging or warm-up period, a fast-acting sub-DPS can smooth out her damage profile. Hunt March 7th can also gain speed and CRIT DMG by learning from Ellen.

3. Sustain Position

Huohuo: Energy and ATK are a perfect fit for a Destruction DPS who needs to use her Ultimate to enter an enhanced state.

Fu Xuan: If Ellen consumes HP or needs a lot of CRIT Rate, Fu Xuan’s damage mitigation, crowd-control resistance, and CRIT Rate are highly valuable.

Aventurine: Frequent follow-up attacks and Skill Point generation make him suitable for teams with moderate Skill Point consumption.

Luocha: If both Ellen and her support consume Skill Points heavily, Luocha provides comfortable healing with minimal resource pressure.

Preparation Guide: Relics, Light Cones, and Stellar Jade

Whether you decide to pull for her or not, preparing in advance is never a bad idea.

1. Pre-farming Relics — Pending Official Confirmation

For the outer set, Hunter of Glacial Forest is the obvious general Ice option. If Ellen grants herself a great deal of CRIT Rate, a CRIT DMG Body may be preferable. If she scales with HP or sacrifices HP, keep an eye on new Relic domains.

For Planar Ornaments, Inert Salsotto is suitable for Ultimate or enhanced Skill bursts, while Rutilant Arena fits frequent follow-up attacks or Basic ATKs. If she uses an HP-draining mechanic, consider Izumo Gensei and Takama Divine Realm or Talia: Kingdom of Banditry.

2. Light Cone Choices

Her signature Light Cone will likely provide CRIT, CRIT DMG, or Ice DMG and greatly enhance her unique mechanics. Pull it if your budget allows.

Alternatives:

Brighter Than the Sun: CRIT Rate and Basic ATK DMG, with solid general usability.

The Unreachable Side: CRIT Rate, Max HP, and DMG, making it excellent if Ellen is an HP-based Destruction character.

Something Irreplaceable: ATK, healing on kills, and additional DMG.

For four-star options, A Secret Vow or Under the Blue Sky are good budget choices.

3. Stellar Jade or Wallet?

Version 4.8 falls right around the Christmas season, and major New Year content may follow. International players who are short on Stellar Jade should plan ahead. Kardz supports direct UID top-ups for Star Rail without requiring your account password. Delivery takes only a few minutes, and regular discounts can be combined with major-version promotions. Prepare your resources in advance so you will not panic on December 23, whether you are pulling for the shark maid or her dedicated support.

Based on the current clues, Ellen’s role in Star Rail is quite clear: an Ice on-field Destruction hypercarry.

Her team will most likely focus on finding the strongest possible buffs. As a same-version support, Yao Guang is almost certainly one of the teammates the developers intend for her. If Yao Guang is free, this collaboration could generate enormous excitement.

The only major mystery is whether Ellen’s kit will pay homage to Zenless Zone Zero’s Flash Freeze Charges. If her Traces really grant 50% CRIT Rate during her enhanced state, CRIT Rate Bodies in Star Rail may suddenly become much less valuable.

December 23 is still some time away. Good luck farming perfect double-CRIT relics, Trailblazers, and see you at the Version 4.8 preview livestream!
